One Good Pampering….   Poolside!
By Eileen Majors

With festivities planned for graduation ceremonies, it was a time to to stop and plan for a relaxing celebration to follow, one where we could further celebrate the achievements of our graduate, my granddaughter. What adventure was in store? With the heat of summer, we were looking for something cool and fun. Camping by a lake is always an obvious option where I come from, but the work involved in all of that did not sound like a relaxing escape to me. Water was definitely a critical component for this summer getaway so I decided to scan the pages of Mountain Valley Living to look for an adventure. I thought the calendar might spark an idea but by the time I got to page three, I already had one.

The beautiful full color ad for the Peppermill Resort & Spa in Reno grabbed my attention right away, since our winter getaway with the girls in our family was not only amazing, but a real treat for the ladies  with no cooking or cleaning. That was a big plus and would now be added to the list of critical components for this little vacation celebration. “And a cabana!”, my daughter-in-law Teresa added. We got a cabana at the Peppermill last summer and it was wonderful”, she said. It appeared our plan was now in full motion.

Our arrival to Reno came midweek, on a warm summer day. Since the ladies in our family had so much fun at the Peppermill’s Spa Toscana in December, a few of us planned for a return trip upstairs for a treatment, or should I say “the treatment”. We reveled in the pampering once again and stayed to use the hot and cool pools, and the eucalyptus steam and cedar wood saunas. PR Pool Entrance_1Their stunning Caladium has an indoor pool and secret gardens with cascading waterfalls and peaceful sanctuaries. We took it all in and were ready for anything the kids wanted, and they wanted water. We held the cabana for a surprise. Everybody loved the cabana; we even watched the Giants game while the kids were swimming. I was thrilled to have a sanctuary from the sun.

We were greeted and checked on by our personal host and it did not take us long to discover the convenience of ordering meals poolside. It made so much more sense than dressing up and going in to eat. Our family loves to swim and the Peppermill has the most beautiful pools and patios. It looked as if we had taken our own Tuscan escape. White stone patios lined with antique style lamp posts and big baskets of red blooming plants offer the ambience you might expect in one of Italy’s seaside resorts. Red canopies top outdoor patios and tile roofing over cabanas and outbuildings further set the Tuscan scene.

Two gorgeous resort pools are geothermally-heated, offering year ‘round enjoyment. Three spas further add to the relaxation. Our cabana included a couch, two chairs with a table, an ottoman and two loungers. All seating was very comfortable. A 32-inch television is mounted in the corner and our iPod hooked up music through the TV speakers. A small safe is provided and a ceiling fan made for a cool and comfortable retreat from the sun.

Kids took in the cabana life for only a few minutes before heading to the pools, where they spent most of the day. Everyone took nice breaks in the cabanas throughout the day. The parents in our group took their turns going in to play the casino games and we even had a couple of big winners in our group!

By late afternoon, we we ordered room service and turned the game on. The fan inside our cabana offered a more-than-comfortable setting. I ventured into a book about the history of Virginia City while the kids enjoyed the show.

We really enjoyed the whole cabana experience; our cabana was steps from the upper deck pool. Did I say we all felt extremely pampered that day?  Because we certainly did. We clung to our cabana until 10pm, when we ventured back to our rooms. Two spa suites were also part of the fun. plus two more rooms. Several of the adults ventured out to the casino while a few of us moms (and Grandma) orchestrated the end to a spectacular day.

One late night call to room service brought the delivery of hot fudge sundaes and Chocolate Lava Cake, one of many specialty desserts at the Peppermill. The morning allowed time for another swim before packing up and having breakfast. Our entire group had a blast!
