Getting The Guest Room Together

Don’t fret; just start early on the daunting task of turning your hardly used, catch-all spare room into a comfortable place for guests to sleep.

The first and probably most difficult task will be clearing the space, if like many of us, you have allowed this vacant room to be a drop off point for your latest projects or other miscellaneous items. If so, instead of piling all the extra ‘stuff’’ into a closet somewhere, do yourself a favor and start with four or five nice big plastic bins with lids. This will enable you to store items in some order. Your sense of well being after guests leave will be well worth the investment.

Also have a few jars with lids handy if you have any projects in the works with small items you may wish to store.

Clean the space and remove all the clutter you can bare to spare. Try to find a proper place to store things, so you don’t have to deal with it all after the holidays. Wash the windows, sills, door and mirrors.

When you make up a fresh bed for your guests, try to include a couple of extra pillows if you can. Add a couple of extra blankets placed at the foot of the bed.

Be sure to include a chair of some sort and an alarm clock. If there is a television in the room, make sure the remote control is handy. If there is space and furniture to create a comfortable place to sit, set it up. This will give your company some privacy if they want to take some time to be by themself. Place extra towels and wash cloths on a dresser and open the closet to a space you have cleared and ready for your guests’ hanging clothes.

Everything does not need to be perfect. As long as the room is uncluttered, fresh and clean, don’t worry about everything matching perfectly.

Be sure to include some sort of night light that will aid them in finding the bathroom in the middle of the night.

Place a lamp on a table near the bed so they can find it easily. Most people have cell phones these days, but if not, it is always nice to have a phone extension for your guests, if possible.

Last but certainly not least, have some fun putting together a basket of goodies they may enjoy. Include microwave popcoren and wrapped chocolates or other decadent candies. Choose a few magazines they might like and be sure to include the latest copy of Mountain Valley Living!

Remember the most comfortable thing you can do for your guests, is to make sure they know you are comfortable, as you welcome them into your family this holiday season.
