All shapes and colors including Smokey Bear adorn the skies. The Great Reno Balloon Race is free to spectators thanks to the generous support of event sponsors. It is always scheduled for the first Friday through Sunday after Labor Day.
The 2010 Great Reno Balloon Race takes place September 10th – 12th.
This event includes on-field and off-field competitions as well as a “Glow Show” planned for 5 am on Saturday and Sunday. This is one of the largest hot air balloon festivals in the country. You have to get up early to see the best stuff, but it’s definitely worth it. Before the light begins to dawn, balloons are fired up and glowing across Rancho San Rafael Park. The park encompasses 600 acres just northwest of downtown Reno. For spectators, the event starts on Friday, September 10th with the mass ascension launch of over 100 hot air balloons scheduled for 6:45 am. Events are planned for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The event is located at Rancho San Rafael Park at 1595 N. Sierra St. in Reno, Nevada

The event happens August 7th; the opportunity to give to this worthy cause never ends. At least that’s the way A. J. Cassella feels about it. After witnessing the miracle of a wish being granted to a close friend years ago, A. J. has become involved with the Make A Wish Foundation to raise over $150,000.00 for the cause.
Each year he hosts a fishing tournament at Big Cove Resort on the Lake Almanor Peninsula. This year the tournament is August 7th and the fun begins at 6 am with weigh in at noon. Lunch is included and a T Shirt for the $50 adult entry fee which includes fishing license. (kids under 10: $25) There is a separate big fish contest with a $20 entry fee.
THE 2009 FISH FOR A WISH TOURNAMENT GRANTED THESE FOUR WISHES:
1. Gila, age 10 – Her wish was for a bedroom makeover: Living with her grandparents and claiming it as her first real home, Gila pointed out all the special things she pictured in her new room. Designers incorporated them all and added a few cool touches. Since she loves art, the wish team decorated the walls with decals so she could move them around and redesign anytime herself. Gila suffers from sickle cell anemia.
2. Jason, age 8 – When asked what his one wish would be, he immediately knew he wanted to visit Kennedy Space Center. Having read many books on the subject, Jason actually wanted to be an astronaut so he was thrilled when his family was whisked away to sunny Florida. His 3 day exploration of the space center included lunch with an astronaut, his favorite part!
3. Lillian, age 12 – Battling with lymphoma, Lillian’s wish was simply to physically fly! After some consideration she decided sh wanted to learn to hang glide. On her wish day, Lillian and her parents were driven to Fort Funston where she mastered the art with the help of an instructor from the San Francisco Hang Gliding Center. The highlight of the trip was when she and her instructor ran off the edge of an oceanside cliff in tandem and soared through the air.
4. Anthony, age 9 – A big fan of surfing on televeison, Anthony dreamed of learning to surf so when the wish team approached him about granting him a wish, he chose a magical trip to Hawaii to learn to surf. His favorite part of the trip was his experience at AccesSurf, an organization with adaptive surfing instruction for people with disabilities. His dream came true and he and his family enjoyed a great trip to Hawaii including a luau and sunset cruise.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions. A.J.’s goal this year is to raise $60,000 for the cause. Tournament entry forms are available at Big Cove Resort. You can call the resort at 530-596-3349 for more information or visit A.J.’s website at www.weekendsforwishes.org/fishforawish, where you can also donate to this worthy cause.

Rising Country Artist, Alex Woodard, Booked to Play Momboosa
(Lake Almanor, CA.) – The Momboosa Music Festival is excited to announce that country artist Alex Woodard is confirmed to play at this year’s Lake Almanor music and arts festival.
Woodard, who hails from southern California, brings his unique brand of surfer-country musical stylings to the Momboosa stage this July.
Gerorge Varga, Music Editor of the San Diego Union Tribune says that “Woodard’s well-crafted songs are cut from the same cloth as Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Jim Croce, Rodney Crowell, and John Mellencamp, whose music eloquently captures earthy truths about living, loving and growing older without losing the dreams of youth.”
Alex Woodward scheduled to appear at Momboos Music & Arts Festival july 17
Woodard has previously toured and opened for Nickel Creek, Shawn Mullins, Robert Earl Keen, JulIanne Hough, Switchfoot and Sister Hazel.
Momboosa Music Festival is a summer-long celebration, consisting of five wine/beer walks, a pre-show concert at Bailey Creek Golf Course on Saturday July 3, and the return of the all day music festival at the Chester Meadow located between the Lake Almanor shoreline and Chester, Calif., Saturday, July 17, 2010. This year’s festival, produced by Liquid Blue Events, will showcase musical performances from the Chris Gardner Band, Alex Woodard and more. The festival provides a family-friendly environment with a vendor show, play zone, plenty of food and libations, an art contest, private group cabanas, VIP accommodations and outdoor beach activities. Summer is returning to the magnificent Lake Almanor Basin. It’s time to put away the snow toys and dust off our bicycles for the 28th Annual Mile High 100. This local tradition is not a race but an extraordinary scenic series of tours for cyclists of all ages and abilities. Peddling the shoreline of sparkling Lake Almanor and winding through the towering forest to the opening meadows of the lush Indian Valley is a peaceful, slow paced way to really soak in the beauty of our Mountain Valley home for locals and visitors alike. All three route choices (Century Ride 108 Miles, Metric Century 56 Miles and Half Metric Century 33 Miles) will enjoy great views, great food and the best mountain hospitality this neck of the woods has to offer. Century riders will enjoy a delicious lunch in Taylorsville catered by Carols Cafe of Prattville. All registered riders will also be treated to the Elks Lodge spaghetti feed with all the trimmings and dessert served from noon to 6 pm. Non riders can purchase dinner tickets for $7. Each year, as winter sets in, our days and evenings are brightened by the many festivities that take place between Thanksgiving and New Years. This year is no exception. Beginning in late November there are many venues that bring holiday cheer, no matter where you live. Here are just a few to pick from.
Christmas Faires
In Eastern Plumas County, The Mohawk Artist’s Guild Christmas Faire will be held on Friday Nov. 27 and Saturday, Nov. 28, beginning at 10 am. The purpose of this guild is to raise funds to support art and music in the schools. A large variety of vendors will be selling their arts and crafts at the Community Resource Center at the corner of Hwys 70 and 89 by Graeagle. Refreshments will be served. There will be a raffle with prizes. Proceeds from this juried show and from the spring show go to Quincy and Portola High Schools, Carmichael Elementary and the pre-schools in Graeagle and Portola as well as Plumas Charter School for their art and music programs. The guild and its members also support Plumas Arts. For more information call Marian Haid at 530-836-1399.
In Susanville, the public is invited to the Lassen County Fair, Christmas Craft Fair on Friday, December 4 from 5-9 PM and Saturday, December 5 from 10-3. Last year this craft fair attracted over 2,000 people and was held in three separate buildings on the fairgrounds. Visitors were shuttled up and down the midway to the different buildings. A local group will be running a food concession stand for visitors and crafters to enjoy. For those who would like to participate in the craft fair, applications may be downloaded at www.lassencountyfair.org/CRAFTFAIR.asp and returned to them by Nov. 20th, 2009. Or call 530-251-8900 for more information.
In Chester, The Bailey Creek Boutiquers will be holding their annual craft

fair at the Elks Lodge on Main Street in Chester on Saturday, November 28. This was my favorite fair last year for several reasons. Twelve women from Bailey Creek, who love to make crafts, decided that they wanted a project that was fun for themselves and that would also benefit the community. As a result, they have kept prices low and included many articles that children can buy for their parents for Christmas, starting at 50 cents. They also give a percentage of the profits to the Angel Tree Program which collects money and provides baskets of food, clothing, and toys for those in need. Articles for sale include holiday gifts, cards, delicious homemade baked goods and candy with samples available, jewelry, hand knitted scarves and hats and artwork. Suzanne Newman will also have a makeup and skin care booth with demonstrations.
Musical Celebrations
Susanville, CA is the site of the “Magical Country Christmas Parade” in Historic Uptown Susanville. On December 5, local musical talent will begin the evening followed by the lighted Christmas parade ending at the Elks Lodge at the top of Main Street. Here Santa will light the town Christmas Tree followed by a fireworks display. The parade begins at 5:30 sharp with tree lighting at 6 p.m. For more information you may call the Chamber of Commerce at 530-257-4323 or log onto www.lassencountychamber.org
The Susanville Symphony will bring the Christmas spirit alive with this year’s world premier of Maestro Benjamin Wade’s original arrangement of the “Twelve Days of Christmas”. Other traditional favorites include Winter Wonderland, The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, Overture to the Miracle on 34th Street and other seasonal favorites. Tickets may be purchased for performances on either Friday, Dec. 11, at 7 PM or Sunday, Dec. 13 at 2:30 PM at Susanville Assembly of God Church. Information on all performances by the symphony can be found at www.susanvillesymphony.com.
In Chester, CA, the Chester Community Chorus will be performing their annual Christmas concert on Dec. 4, 5 and 6 entitled “We Wish You a Merry Madrigal”. The repertoire for this concert will include a mixture of light madrigal music, traditional music with a new touch, and some new pieces. Some of the music will be sung in other languages including Pasko Na Naman, a Filipino song from Director Elsie Wesley’s native country that reflects a holiday spirit filled with excitement and anticipation . The performing groups include the Chorus, Chorale, Kindred Spirits, NEWGEN, Handbell Ensemble, and special performances of solo flute with piano, a vocal solo and interpretive dance. The Friday and Saturday concerts begin at 7 PM and Sunday matinee begins at 3 PM. There is no charge for the concerts but donations are always appreciated. Come early for a good seat.
Santa Claus is Coming to Town
Santa keeps very busy here in the mountains. Not only will he be at Susanville for the lighting of the tree and the Magical Country Christmas Parade on December 5 but he will also be at the following places.
Chester, CA will celebrate Santa’s return on November 27 with their annual Merchants Night and Light Parade. This is holiday fun for friends and families. Merchants stay open with holiday goodies and sales. There will be bonfires, caroling, Christmas tree lighting and a light parade. Festivities take place between 5 and 9 pm. The whole family will enjoy coming out to welcome in the holiday season. Call Chester/Lake Almanor Chamber of Commerce for further info at (530) 258-2426.
Westwood, CA will see Santa on December 5 at the Community Center on Ash Street. After the tree lighting, visitors will have a chance to welcome Santa, have some hot chocolate and cookies while the Westwood Family Resource Center gifts each child with a new children’s book. To find out more, call Westwood Chamber of Commerce at (530) 256-2456.
If you visit downtown Graegle, CA between 1 and 5 PM on December 5, you will have a chance to visit the little red houses, have your picture taken with Santa and also ride through town in the horse-drawn trolley. For more information call (530) 836-2712.
Portola, CA will have a festive tree lighting ceremony and bonfire on Commercial Street on December 4 and on December 5 you can visit with Santa at the Portola Railroad Museum and have some hot chocolate and other refreshments. If you miss Santa on December 5, he will return here on December 12! For more information on the Santa Train, call (530) 832-4141.
Be sure and check out the Calendar of Events in the back of this magazine for further information on all the festivities in this area including Chico, Redding, and Reno. Happy Holidays!

Thursday, October 1st, Eastern Plumas Health Care Foundation will host their annual charity golf tournament at the beautiful Whitehawk Ranch Golf Club.
The event highlights will include a pre-tournament horse race. Lunch and tournament prizes are part of the fun which includes a “Closest-to-the-Pin” and an “In the Circle” contest. There will be a CareFlight helicopter landing and free blood pressure checks by EPHC Ambulance staff.
This is a big fundraiser for Eastern Plumas Health Care and registration fees are tax deductible. This year they hope to raise enough funds for a Wireless Electrocardiogram (EKG) Transmission system. Using this equipment, a patient’s EKG could be sent to the receiving hospital from the ambulance while en route. For sponsorship information or to make a donation, call Julie or Regina at (530) 832-6564 or email jaguiar@ephc.org. Donations may be made to EPHC Foundation, 500 First Avenue, Portola, CA 96122.
Bike MS: The Great Basin Sierra Ride
September 12 & 13
Graeagle, CA
Bike MS is organized by the National MS Society · Great Basin Sierra Office, All America Chapter to support services for those suffering with Multiple Sclerosis and to help fund research for a cure. Bike MS: The Great Basin Sierra Ride takes place September 12 & 13 in picturesque Graeagle, California.
The event goes for two days, with lots of route choices and an option for 140 total miles. Individuals and teams are invited to participate. Any group of four or more people can form a team.
After registering, riders receive everything needed to collect contributions. By using the organization’s online fundraising tools, it is easy for friends and family of participants to contribute to the ride. Raising more than the minimum amount of $250 also makes a participant eligible to win great prizes. Registration is available up until the morning of the ride. If you can’t ride, you can still help by supporting a participant.
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is working towards their goal for a world free from MS. They simultaneously fund research for a cure while also helping people who currently live with MS lead more fulfilling lives.

Our Forests Are More Than Just Trees
Go beyond “awareness” all the way to “understanding”! Learn how our vast, wonderful and resilient forests function and our role in maintaining their health and beauty…forever!
Again this summer, an experienced instructor will conduct a free, week long, fast paced seminar on the wonders of our local forests. Each day will include morning classroom discussions supported by colorful multi-media presentations. Attendees will see for themselves how a forest functions on guided tours of some of the most diverse, beautiful and fascinating sites in northern Plumas County.
Though this experience is designed for teachers, who will receive 3 continuing education credits on completion of the course, the general public is encouraged to attend as well. Each day will begin at the wonderful new Collins Pine Company Museum. Here presentations will be given on such important topics as soil: the world beneath our feet, tree and plant identification, forests and the carbon cycle, fire in the forest, natural succession: the changing forest and our resilient ecosystems. Each afternoon will be spent at a variety of fascinating sites in the forest where participants will see that a forest is more than just trees and how its components work together. The role that humans have played, and must play, in keeping our forests healthy and productive will be demonstrated and discussed. The importance of these forests to our human habitat, on a local and global basis, will be made clear as well.
This series is sponsored by the Plumas County Board of Supervisors, Feather River College and the U.S. Forest Service. The principal instructor is Keith Crummer, a professional forester for over 40 years and retired local District Ranger. Keith will be assisted by his wife, Wanda, who taught in Greenville and Chester schools for some 14 years. Her roll will be to help formulate the information given into classroom ready presentations.
The seminar is free and will run from August 10 through 14. Classes will begin at 8:00 AM at the Collins Pine Museum, next to their sawmill, in Chester. Each day will end at 4:30 PM after a field trip to fascinating sites such as the U.S.F.S Locherman Canyon Outdoor Classroom, Collins Pine’s Park 40, the Storrie Fire and beautiful Willow Lake Basin.
In addition to the lectures, a wealth of reference and instructional materials will be made available, especially designed for K-12 teachers and those interested in furthering their understanding of Forest Ecology. An illustrated book The Dynamic Forest, written by Dale Knutsen and Keith Crummer, is available for pre-course reading or for those interested in follow-up study. Participants will find how much more forests are than just a place where trees grow!
For more information or to sign up, contact Keith Crummer at 259-2572.
