Holiday Festivities in the Sierra's

by Jan Cox

Each year, as winter sets in, our days and evenings are brightened by the many festivities that take place between Thanksgiving and New Years. This year is no exception. Beginning in late November there are many venues that bring holiday cheer, no matter where you live. Here are just a few to pick from.

Christmas Faires

In Eastern Plumas County, The Mohawk Artist’s Guild Christmas Faire will be held on Friday Nov. 27 and Saturday, Nov. 28, beginning at 10 am. The purpose of this guild is to raise funds to support art and music in the schools. A large variety of vendors will be selling their arts and crafts at the Community Resource Center at the corner of Hwys 70 and 89 by Graeagle. Refreshments will be served. There will be a raffle with prizes. Proceeds from this juried show and from the spring show go to Quincy and Portola High Schools, Carmichael Elementary and the pre-schools in Graeagle and Portola as well as Plumas Charter School for their art and music programs. The guild and its members also support Plumas Arts. For more information call Marian Haid at 530-836-1399.

In Susanville, the public is invited to the Lassen County Fair, Christmas Craft Fair on Friday, December 4 from 5-9 PM and Saturday, December 5 from 10-3. Last year this craft fair attracted over 2,000 people and was held in three separate buildings on the fairgrounds. Visitors were shuttled up and down the midway to the different buildings. A local group will be running a food concession stand for visitors and crafters to enjoy. For those who would like to participate in the craft fair, applications may be downloaded at www.lassencountyfair.org/CRAFTFAIR.asp and returned to them by Nov. 20th, 2009. Or call 530-251-8900 for more information.

In Chester, The Bailey Creek Boutiquers will be holding their annual craft

Purses from Placemats!

fair at the Elks Lodge on Main Street in Chester on Saturday, November 28. This was my favorite fair last year for several reasons. Twelve women from Bailey Creek, who love to make crafts, decided that they wanted a project that was fun for themselves and that would also benefit the community. As a result, they have kept prices low and included many articles that children can buy for their parents for Christmas, starting at 50 cents. They also give a percentage of the profits to the Angel Tree Program which collects money and provides baskets of food, clothing, and toys for those in need. Articles for sale include holiday gifts, cards, delicious homemade baked goods and candy with samples available, jewelry, hand knitted scarves and hats and artwork. Suzanne Newman will also have a makeup and skin care booth with demonstrations.

Musical Celebrations

Susanville, CA is the site of the “Magical Country Christmas Parade” in Historic Uptown Susanville. On December 5, local musical talent will begin the evening followed by the lighted Christmas parade ending at the Elks Lodge at the top of Main Street. Here Santa will light the town Christmas Tree followed by a fireworks display. The parade begins at 5:30 sharp with tree lighting at 6 p.m. For more information you may call the Chamber of Commerce at 530-257-4323 or log onto www.lassencountychamber.org

The Susanville Symphony will bring the Christmas spirit alive with this year’s world premier of Maestro Benjamin Wade’s original arrangement of the “Twelve Days of Christmas”. Other traditional favorites include Winter Wonderland, The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, Overture to the Miracle on 34th Street and other seasonal favorites. Tickets may be purchased for performances on either Friday, Dec. 11, at 7 PM or Sunday, Dec. 13 at 2:30 PM at Susanville Assembly of God Church. Information on all performances by the symphony can be found at www.susanvillesymphony.com.

In Chester, CA, the Chester Community Chorus will be performing their annual Christmas concert on Dec. 4, 5 and 6 entitled “We Wish You a Merry Madrigal”. The repertoire for this concert will include a mixture of light madrigal music, traditional music with a new touch, and some new pieces. Some of the music will be sung in other languages including Pasko Na Naman, a Filipino song from Director Elsie Wesley’s native country that reflects a holiday spirit filled with excitement and anticipation . The performing groups include the Chorus, Chorale, Kindred Spirits, NEWGEN, Handbell Ensemble, and special performances of solo flute with piano, a vocal solo and interpretive dance. The Friday and Saturday concerts begin at 7 PM and Sunday matinee begins at 3 PM. There is no charge for the concerts but donations are always appreciated. Come early for a good seat.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Charity Golf Tournament at Whitehawk

Thursday, October 1st, Eastern Plumas Health Care Foundation will host their annual charity golf tournament at the beautiful Whitehawk Ranch Golf Club.

The event highlights will include a pre-tournament horse race. Lunch and tournament prizes are part of the fun which includes a “Closest-to-the-Pin” and an “In the Circle” contest. There will be a CareFlight helicopter landing and free blood pressure checks by EPHC Ambulance staff.

This is a big fundraiser for Eastern Plumas Health Care and registration fees are tax deductible. This year they hope to raise enough funds for a Wireless Electrocardiogram (EKG) Transmission system. Using this equipment, a patient’s EKG could be sent to the receiving hospital from the ambulance while en route. For sponsorship information or to make a donation, call Julie or Regina at (530) 832-6564 or email jaguiar@ephc.org. Donations may be made to EPHC Foundation, 500 First Avenue, Portola, CA 96122.

Forest Tours in Chester – August 10 – 14

Our Forests Are More Than Just Trees

Go beyond “awareness” all the way to “understanding”! Learn how our vast, wonderful and resilient forests function and our role in maintaining their health and beauty…forever!

Again this summer, an experienced instructor will conduct a free, week long, fast paced seminar on the wonders of our local forests. Each day will include morning classroom discussions supported by colorful multi-media presentations. Attendees will see for themselves how a forest functions on guided tours of some of the most diverse, beautiful and fascinating sites in northern Plumas County.

Though this experience is designed for teachers, who will receive 3 continuing education credits on completion of the course, the general public is encouraged to attend as well. Each day will begin at the wonderful new Collins Pine Company Museum. Here presentations will be given on such important topics as soil: the world beneath our feet, tree and plant identification, forests and the carbon cycle, fire in the forest, natural succession: the changing forest and our resilient ecosystems. Each afternoon will be spent at a variety of fascinating sites in the forest where participants will see that a forest is more than just trees and how its components work together. The role that humans have played, and must play, in keeping our forests healthy and productive will be demonstrated and discussed. The importance of these forests to our human habitat, on a local and global basis, will be made clear as well.

This series is sponsored by the Plumas County Board of Supervisors, Feather River College and the U.S. Forest Service. The principal instructor is Keith Crummer, a professional forester for over 40 years and retired local District Ranger. Keith will be assisted by his wife, Wanda, who taught in Greenville and Chester schools for some 14 years. Her roll will be to help formulate the information given into classroom ready presentations.

The seminar is free and will run from August 10 through 14. Classes will begin at 8:00 AM at the Collins Pine Museum, next to their sawmill, in Chester. Each day will end at 4:30 PM after a field trip to fascinating sites such as the U.S.F.S Locherman Canyon Outdoor Classroom, Collins Pine’s Park 40, the Storrie Fire and beautiful Willow Lake Basin.

In addition to the lectures, a wealth of reference and instructional materials will be made available, especially designed for K-12 teachers and those interested in furthering their understanding of Forest Ecology. An illustrated book The Dynamic Forest, written by Dale Knutsen and Keith Crummer, is available for pre-course reading or for those interested in follow-up study. Participants will find how much more forests are than just a place where trees grow!

For more information or to sign up, contact Keith Crummer at 259-2572.

August Arts at Almanor - 2009

by Jan Cox

Art as defined in Webster’s Dictionary is “the activity of using imagination and skill to create beautiful things.” As we move into the month of August, the arts are in plain view in Northern California. You will find art shows throughout the mountain communities.

Watercolor by Jacquie Cordova

What is it about the arts that draw people in? Jacquie Cordova, a local artist and teacher from Westwood, whose watercolor and oil paintings and raku pottery can be seen in local shows and galleries, has this to say about the arts.

“Nothing so calms the spirit, forming a connection to self and life, as painting and creating in the arts. Painting and other forms of creating are healing moments, and too frequently people put off doing these “activities” because they seem to lack practicality or direct results in their life. Whether one participates in dance, music, the visual or dramatic arts, creating employs all of one’s senses and most of one’s brain cells. As indicated by the research and statistics over the last 20 years, creating in the arts better prepares a person for all walks of life.”

For a variety of reasons, most of us are drawn to the arts. We either take part in various artistic endeavors for fun or for profit, or we become consumers by attending performing arts productions or visual arts demonstrations, art shows, museums and galleries. For this writer, this adds beauty and drama to my life. It allows me to experience the world in a totally different way, to feel joy and a sense of awe.

August is a great month to vacation in the Almanor Basin and while you are here, why not checkout one or more of the following artist venues!

August 1st and 2nd–Almanor Art Show, Collins Pine Lawn, Main Street Chester, Sat. 10 am–5 pm, Sun. 10 am-4 pm.

This juried art show sponsored by Plumas Arts Commission is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. It was started on the shores of Lake Almanor by a group of artists who summered in the area. In the early 1980’s the newly formed Plumas Arts Commission took over the show and it soon grew too large and was moved to its present location on the beautiful shady Collins Pine lawn on Main Street

Almanor Art Show on Collins Pine Lawn

in Chester. Both local artists and those from at least 6 western states take part in the show.

Food and drink booths abound along the edge of the lawn and on Saturday there will be music from noon to5 pm by Now and Then, featuring Hank Alrich, Dave Johns and Shelley Miller Johns. On Sunday, Dutch Treat, from Susanville will be entertaining. For further information, go to www.plumasarts.org.

August 8 and 15 weekends–Bidwell House Art Show at 1 Main Street, Chester, CA. Sat. 10 am-5pm, Sun. 10 am-4 pm.

Artists from Oregon, Nevada, and Northern California bring everything from fine art, to hand made soaps, Corion cutting boards, Victorian style clothing and more to this show. This year, Wanda Skeffington will be selling natural fiber clothing while Al Dockwiller will again offer his beautiful, well formed pottery. Also reappearing will be Peruvian artist Hugo Lecaros. Andean music will be presented for your pleasure by Jose Cabezos. Each of the two weekends will feature some of the same vendors and some different. The Rescue and Adoption Foundation for Wolves will also be present.

Now and Then will perform on Sat. at Almanor Art Show

August 14–Second Friday! Old Town Chester Art Galleries and Merchants. 5 pm -8 pm

Tourists and residents alike can once again enjoy the work of local artists in both Northwood’s Gallery and B & B Booksellers–Back Room Gallery. Music is provided at the book store while wine and soft drinks and a variety of appetizers at both venues create a great way to begin the weekend.

August 15–Art From the Heart at Chester Memorial Hall, 225 Gay Street, Chester, CA–Cocktails at 6 pm, Dinner at 7 pm

This auction will feature local art donated by many of our well known artists in the Almanor Basin with all proceeds going to Sierra Hospice. A sit down gourmet dinner will be served by Phyllis’ Phabulous Phood and includes Filet of Beef in Puff Pastry with Madera Sauce or Shrimp Scampi en Brochette with Wild Rice. There will be limited seating so plan on purchasing your tickets soon. Tickets can be purchased from David Price Jewelers at 216 Main Street or Main Street Fireside and Garage Door Store, 515 Main Street. High Sierra Music Festival July 2 -5, 2009

QUINCY, CA

Each year a group of exceptional artists gather in Quincy for the four day event, High Sierra Music Festival. Festival goers travel from near and far to see the line up of bands for this event. Each year the line up is a little bit different but each year the festival has what it takes to attract both big names in the music business and the big crowds that follow. This year’s line up is no exception.

Ani DiFranco is a new face at the festival this year. She has gained wide popularity throughout the country for her musical talent and the messages in her music. Rolling Stone Magazine called her “fiercely independent”. After a spoof done on the White House Poetry Jam held recently, John Stewart on The Daily Show labeled June as Ani DiFranco month. John Butler and Umphrey’s McGee are also headliners at this event.

Beginning in Quincy in 1991, this festival is held annually the weekend of July 4 and is an eclectic mix of jazz, newgrass, bluegrass and improvisational music such as jamband. This year, Joe Craven touted as “A madman with anything with strings attached” will be performing with the talented bassist, pianist and composer Sam Bevans and will also be serving as artist-at-large and emcee. Check the website at http://www.highsierramusic.com for information on ticket availability and prices for this popular festival.

Art Show- Chester Park on July 4, 2009

Please come!!
JULY 4 – ART SHOW – CHESTER PARK
Chester Park Art Show

We were invited to see Deb Groesser’s new Artwork in person in Chester where over 50 originals will be on display! The show will include watercolor, pen & ink, acrylic and pastel paintings, as well as some new giclees, and you’ll find a surprising variety of subject matter.

She invites the public to stop by and say ‘Hi’ and enjoy what she’s been working on
……which is why she has not been out and about very often!

The photo above is a unique project she just completed. After being framed, it will be installed in it’s beautiful new home. With more light on it, the colors really come to life and you can practically feel the rough texture of the bark. She said, “It’s been a truly fun and size-wise interesting painting to work on!”

You can meet Deb Groesser in Chester at the July 4th art show in the park where many artists will be displaying their works, as is tradition in Chester, on the 4th of July. Groesser also gave us this update on Summer Art Workshops in Lake Almanor:
Beginning Watercolor….. June 27 & 28
Art Retreat……. July 15-18
Watercolor Magic…… August 8 & 9
More Fun With Watercolor….
September 19 & 20
For more information, contact her at debgroesser@frontiernet.net

In late September and October, she takes the workshops on the road to some of her other favorite places to teach, Shaver Lake and Cottonwood.

California Gold Discovery Days

By Melissa Wynnrodney3

Plumas-Eureka State Park is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary in Johnsville, just off Highway 70 near Blairsden, July 18th and 19th with California Gold Discovery Days. During the California gold rush, this area was booming. Come and experience what is was like back in that day. See demonstrations in costume of the 19th century. Observe blacksmithing, butter churning and candle making. My personal favorites are the re-enactments of assaying and gold panning. Being the daughter of a gold miner, a special kind of excitement makes me tingle from finding those precious yellow rocks in the bottom of the gold pan.

Touring Moriarity House, a nineteen century gold miner’s cabin within Plumas-Eureka State Park is a great opportunity to look into the way this rare breed of prospecting men lived back in the mining heydays.

A home town BBQ lunch will be served as well. (fee applies) There will be no day use fee into the park during the celebration so come on over for some local history and fun. For more details please contact the park ranger at 530-836-2380.

9th Annual Reno Film Festival

Announces June 17-21 Schedule

The 9thannual Reno Film Festival takes center stage, Wednesday thru Sunday, June 17-21, with something old, something new and lots of films, fun and education. The something old is the return of many festival favorites such as the Reno Indie competition, classic films once again on the big screen and a number of learning sessions such as Bobby Logan’s 1 Day Film School and a filmmakers panel. The something new is exciting new festival venues such as UNR’s Joe Crowley Student Union theater, Studio on 4th, St. James Infirmary and two outdoor screenings in Wingfield Park in downtown Reno.

The festival kicks off on Wednesday with the awards presentation of this year’s Lumière All-School Film Fest at the Nevada Museum of Art. Most entries are “home grown” student talent from elementary to high school and even some college. Categories include music, mini-documentaries & visual essays, how-to-films, science and math films, news stories & perspective pieces, public service announcements, animation (CGI, hand-drawn, and stop-motion), fake commercials, original trailers, and live action, science fiction and western shorts.

On Thursday, everyone is invited to a free “Movie on the Mayor” in Wingfield Park. The movie is the festival’s tribute to the incomparable Paul Newman and it’s one of his most fun films, “Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid.” Another free film in the park, this one in conjunction with the Tour de Nez bike race, will screen the next night. It’s the classic bicycle race film, “Breaking Away.”

Finalists from this year’s Reno Indie competition will be shown throughout the festival beginning on Thursday and running thru Sunday. Categories include documentary, animation, drama, comedy, music, sci-fi, family, foreign and Nevada-related. On Friday, festival organizers are pleased to present the Nevada premiere of “Adopt A Sailor,” a comedy/drama that stars Patricia (Bebe Neuwirth) and Richard (Peter Coyote), as a successful and hip couple from the Upper West Side of New York City who inadvertently “adopt a sailor” (Ethan Peck—Gregory Peck’s grandson) during Fleet Week in the city. The young sailor from Turkey Scratch, Arkansas changes their lives forever. The film’s director and producer will introduce the film.

On Saturday afternoon, “The Ballad of Cable Hogue” will be presented and the legendary Stella Stevens will be present for this event. The film was Sam Peckinpah’s tribute to the passing away of the old West that featured brilliant performances by Jason Robards as a desert hobo and Ms. Stevens as his girlfriend.

Michael Blake won an Oscar for his “Dancing With Wolves” screenplay and he re-visits the West in his informative documentary “The American West—with Michael Blake.” This film will be screened on Sunday with Blake present for Q&A. The film takes viewers on a road trip to explore the places in the American West important to Native American people and their encounters with those who invaded their territories in the mid to late 1800s.

Singer Lacy J. Dalton, who once toured with Johnny Cash, will introduce a film about him, “Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison” and the festival will also include a gala awards & tribute dinner and much more for film fans and filmmakers. The festival’s website—www.renofilmfestival.com—has the complete schedule and tickets may be purchased at this site.

Festival sponsors this year are Blockbuster, the City of Reno’s Arts & Culture Commission, E.L Cord Foundation, DP Foundation and the Nevada Arts Council & National Endowment for the Arts.
