Glow-In-The-Dark Golf At Mt. Huff Golf Course

By Melissa Wynn Blessed with a mild Summer climate, the mountain communities throughout the Sierra Nevada provide a wide variety of golfing options for locals and visitors from warmer climates alike. Several choices are available for those looking to enjoy a sunny afternoon knocking balls around the green. But when was the last time you played a round on a cool, clear, dark mountain night? During the months of Summer and early Fall, by the light of the moon, with some LED light bulb support, golfers are invited to do just that at the Mount Huff Golf Course in Crescent Mills. Each month when...

Fishing Fun In and Around Lake Almanor

By Bob Kopernik, Lucky Grady Fishing Guide Service If you are new to this area and are interested in drowning a few worms or crickets in hopes of having Fish Tacos for dinner, do yourself a favor and purchase a detailed geographical map of the area. I like the Northern California DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer Map book because it shows most all of the lakes, streams, campgrounds and the roads to get you there.  Another good resource is the California Department of Fish and Wildlife website, to see where and when they last planted fish into the place that you are thinking about fishing.  You...

Businesses Welcomed in the Small Town of Westwood

Westwood’s business community is well supported by the townspeople. The welcoming streets are named alphabetically by the names of trees. Streets are lined with old wooden homes, reminiscent of its early lumber days’ history. Retail businesses include three convenience stores, two with fuels, Lassen True Value hardware store, Now and Then thrift shop and Old Town Mercantile, an artists’ collective/Shabby Chic home furnishings & decor store which has been moving and expanding for its new early April Grand Re-opening. The town recently lost its grocery store, due to retirement, as was the...

A Walk Through Time

In August of 1911 the man we all know as Ishi walked into Oroville. He was lonely, emaciated, and exhausted after having spent the last three years alone, being the last remaining member of the Yahi tribe. He was quickly taken under the wing of Alfred L. Kroeber who was an anthropologist. Ishi was taken to the Bay area where he worked as a janitor and was considered a “research assistant”. It was in 1914 when Kroeber took Ishi against his wishes back to Deer Creek in an effort to see first hand how Ishi lived in that environment. It was during this trip with Kroeber, Ishi’s physician Saxton...

Exploring Our Local Winter Wonderland – Snowshoeing, Skiing, Sledding And More

By Mara Dobyns Photos by Jessica Compton- JCM Photography In this beautiful area of Northern California we are often spoiled with snow which means we have countless opportunities for fun in the outdoor world. In my opinion it would be pretty silly not to take advantage of it. Whether you enjoy snowshoeing, cross country or downhill skiing, sledding, or just exploring your local backcountry, we’ve got something for everyone. When I was a kid having my birthday in January always meant one thing, going to our favorite local hill for play, Stover, celebrating with snow and sledding until our...

Exploring Ice Caves In Lassen County

Photos and Article by Mara Dobyns “Life is an adventure. It’s not about the destination we reach that’s most rewarding, it’s the journey along the way. So write it down! & treasure the memory forever…” – Barlena Morina While exploring in Lassen National Forest, take highway 36 to Wilson Lake Road 29 & 63, then make a right onto the 29 N 19 road. Next, find the E. Spur Road off of 29 N 19, and if you’re lucky, you’ll stumble upon a tree marked “Ice” in blue paint. From there just ahead you will find an opening with a couch carved out of a tree, a trailhead, and a mailbox...

Tank On Mastering The Water

By Tank It was almost exactly two years ago when I stepped out of that rescue to meet my new parents and Ellie, the first of many kids I would meet in this crazy new family of mine. I was still scared though. When they came to get me, I was pretty upset already. I hadn’t been eating so they let me sit in the office with the girls all day at the rescue and eat chicken. That’s how upset I was. That ride home from the shelter was a long one; I held tightly onto Ellie for the whole ride, all 56 boney pounds of me, right on her lap. Our first stop out of the truck was Lake Almanor. There I would...

Like Living On Vacation Year ‘Round Local Palapa Bar

By Melissa Wynn   When you have a favorite vacation destination that you visit every chance you get it is always fun to have a little piece of that place in your everyday life, a small reminder that keeps you anticipating your inevitable return.    Better yet, join Linda Rouland of Rouland Insurance Agency in Chester in the philosophy, “Stop creating a life that you need a vacation from. Instead, live where you want to live and create the life you want today. This isn’t rehearsal. This IS your life.”   It was this way of thinking that led Linda to surprise her husband, Bob Rouland, with a...
