Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge fan of sugar. I have a sweet tooth like no other. Unfortunately it doesn’t love me back and can cause countless health problems. So let’s talk about some of its benefits. You’re probably thinking, what?! Sugar has benefits? Yes! When it comes to skin care, sugar is one of the best.

Sugar is a natural humectant. It draws moisture from the environment into your skin so when you use products with sugar or sugar derivatives they can actually help hydrate your skin and keep moisture inside! What?! Seriously.

Sugar is also a natural source of glycolic acid which penetrates the skin and breaks down the “glue” that bonds skin cells which encourages cell turnover and can generate younger-looking, healthy skin.

Last but not least, sugar’s small particles make a fantastic exfoliant and are used in a number of body scrubs to exfoliate the dead surface skin cells and reveal the glowing, beautiful skin underneath. You’re probably thinking “so why not salt?” Sugar scrubs have a few benefits over salt scrubs. Small sugar granules are generally more gentle than salt. Salt can actually cause microscopic tears in the skin. Also because of sugar’s natural humectants properties, these scrubs are more hydrating than most salt scrubs which can strip skin of natural oils and could leave you worse off.

Keep in mind Brown sugar is softer than granulated sugar. It can usually be used on the face and or sensitive skin. Raw sugar is naturally coarse so it is generally used for your body. You can always try a small amount on your arm to test how your skin will react first.

Sugar scrubs are great for your dry winter skin and can be used about twice a week. There are plenty of instore scrubs to choose from or you can make your own with a few simple ingredients. I love this recipe because it is so interchangeable. You can substitute the pumpkin pie spice and vanilla with essential oils for different scents and added benefits.

Ingredients

1 cup brown sugar

3/4 cup coconut oil (melted. I place my entire jar in

a pot of warm water until it turns to liquid)

1 tsp. pure vanilla extract

1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice or essential oils

Mix together and store in a cool dry place. Use whenever and wherever. I love how smooth and healthy it makes everything feel. Enjoy!
