I guess I am a creature of habit and that’s just how I like it. I love going for rides in the truck every day with my dad; I love it when my mom comes home from work, but more than anything, I love taking naps. Don’t get me wrong; I like to play just as much as the next guy. I can go out and play for a good hour or more with my girl, Roxie, and then I usually come in and take a nice, long rest. But this last season I met some real players! My mom and dad called it having company; I just learned what that was all about and was really glad to find out what it meant. Let me explain.

It all started when my dad and I got home one day and there was a little dog at the house with Mom. Hmmm… does she live here too now?” I thought. As soon as I walked in the door I knew Penny was ready to play. We ran around as fast as we could; she was wild and crazy, chasing me and jumping on my back! It wasn’t long before I tired out and laid down on the living room rug. Then, all of a sudden, she came at me, running as fast as she could, she jumped up on my neck and sat there! Are you kidding me? Is she going to live here too, now? I was barely getting any attention from my folks except when they were laughing at my misery. They seemed to think she was hilarious. “How am I ever going to get used to this?”, I thought.

Finally my mom made a barricade and placed Penny on the other side, in the kitchen. She stacked chairs, pillows, baskets, everything she could find to deter that little dog. Ahhh, finally a little rest for me! Then, all of a sudden, as if she were Houdini, Penny came through a crack somewhere, came barreling at me about 35 miles an hour, and again, landed seated on my back!! Who is this and why is she here!? Everyone loved her, but not me. Do we have to keep her?,” I thought. Why was this happening to me?” Mom would fix the barricade and a few minutes later that wild and crazy animal would slip through a crack, and land on my back! After a while, I guess my dad knew I’d had enough so he took me upstairs to go to bed. When I woke up in the morning, Penny was gone. Mom said, “Did you like having company?” “Hmmm… company,” I thought, “I guess that was fun.”

The next week we got another surprise. My dad and I came home and found a bunch of little people at the house with Mom. Now, these guys were fun. They sure loved me and they fed me all day. It didn’t take me long to figure out who to follow; if you keep a close watch on that little guy, you’ll find yourself a never-ending trail of snacks. “Boy, I hope we get to keep ‘em”, I thought. I’m not sure where they came from but I was the star of that show all day. I never did get a nap though. The next morning they all packed up and left and Mom said, “Did you like having company?” I sure did. There was a lot of company around here last month. I think it had something to do with that big tree they put in the living room. Anyhow, I am glad it is all over now. It’s just me and my dad going for rides in the truck and Mom coming home for dinner. That’s just how I like it.
