Editor’s Note:

Mikey Majors is winning races! He has been working on his own bikes since he was small and at age 14 now, he is getting serious about his racing career. You can see his stats and learn more about sponsoring Mikey by emailing his mom at designmvl@gmail.com. Mikey is always raising extra money for parts and is working toward getting a new bike some day. He spends his time at school, doing homework, working on bikes and riding out his back door into the rugged terrain of Lassen County. He takes odd jobs too, like writing articles for Mountain Valley Living Magazine, so he can buy parts (and share his sport.). He rides in the mountains and especially enjoys riding in the high desert behind Susanville. He is doing great in the MRANN series and looks forward to every challenging ride. He plans to ride the Virginia City Grand Prix next year when he is old enough.

Hitting The Dirt By Mikey Majors

While living in northeastern California, I’m sure there is one thing we can agree on; it is our passion for riding dirt bikes. Riding has been my passion since I was 4 years old. Dirt bikes have always been a part of me, and make me who I am. Riding and racing are my life.

262385_252927624723003_1670321_nI learned how to ride a two-wheel bicycle with no training wheels when I was two years old; my parents knew at that moment that I was ready for my first dirt bike. On my third birthday when it was time to open presents, there was not much to unwrap, but I did not seem to care because there was still a piñata to beat.

As I walked outside to start the piñata, there it was! A bright yellow and black Suzuki 50 with a big red bow and my name on it. This is where it all started.

Everyday after preschool and on the weekends my dad and I would go on rides right out our backyard. He taught me everything I know about riding and racing. All of my friends and family ride dirt bikes, even my little sister! On weekends we get together and go on rides whenever we get the chance. We have grown up together; we ride together and we race together. If there is not a race scheduled, on weekends we go find any mud hole we can and make a day of it. It is so much fun.

My first race was at a place called Moonrocks. It took place on Halloween so we got to wear our costumes. When you finish the race you are given a finishing pin that is put in your riding glove as a reward for finishing the race. Trophies are later given for those who place and win in the race.

Unfortunately my chain broke and I had to get picked up by a “Sweeper.”  (the people who volunteer to ride the course or work the aspects of the event and make sure the race is run smooth and safe). I did however, receive a very huge bag filled with candy, gloves and other cool stuff.

This year, my family joined Lassen MC. It is A club that is one of the many clubs of MRANN (Motorcycle Racing Association of Northern Nevada). Each club gets to host their own race. A few weeks ago our club got to put on a race in Doyle, CA at the Fort Sage Riding Area. It is my favorite place to ride. Instead of being on the start line, I was on the other end of things. My dad and I got to help set up the course before the race, and then during the race I got to go be a “sweeper”. It was fun to ride the course and make sure that riders were safe and made the checkpoints they needed to. For the first time I was not the one in a hurry to the finish line. At the end of the weekend we rode the course to remove all of the ribbons and course markings to make sure the area was completely clear of any race debris. The Lassen

See you in the dirt!
