2008 – Each year, the Bureau of Land Management partners with the Forest Service to offer a Fall Colors Bike Ride or Walk on the historic Bizz Johnson Trail, a rails to trails conversion which runs between Susanville and Westwood, California.
It is planned around the spectacular fall color display which occurs along this beautiful stretch of trail. This year’s event is scheduled for October 25th. The trails crosses the Susan River 12 times on bridges and trestles and passes through two tunnels. The fall colors and scenery are remarkable.
Bus rides will be offered up the trail with three choices of trail rides back. The bus will take walkers and riders up in elevation offering not all down hill, but gentle to mostly down hill trips back on the trail. The first bus departs at 8:30 am from the Railroad Depot on Weatherlow St. In Susanville. Riders are encouraged to arrive at 8:00 am to get the bikes signed in and loaded on the trailer. The second bus leaves at 11:00 am, with loading at 10:30.
The bus makesstops at Devil’s Corral offering a 7 mile hike or ride back, then at Fredonyer Pass, for an 18 mile ride. The bus will continue on to Westwood and include a short talk on the history of the town and a ride past the Paul Bunyan and Babe statues. It will then continue on to Mason Station for those desiring the 25 mile trip back on the trail.
Bikes are hauled in pickup trucks and trailers.Hikers and riders ride on Lassen Rural Bus. The roads are gravel, not paved, so fat tires are best for bicycles. For more information on this event, contact the Lassen County Chamber at 277-4323.
